Do you like playing games? Do you enjoy cooking? Do you like to occasionally have more than just soda pop and potato chips as snacks for game night? In this new Monday blog series, game industry personalities will be sharing some of their favorite recipes for game night munchies. Welcome to Gaming Gastronomy! This week our scrumptious apple pie comes from Merry Trzewiczek of Portal Games.

Many of you know Ignacy Trzewiczek very well for his game publishing, game design, blog, books, vlogs, and podcasts. Someone you may not know as well is his wife, Merry (Personal Twitter, Twitter, Website). She is the heart of Portal Games and so wonderful to meet, working the booth at various conventions. Her smiling face and love for the fans of Portal Games makes you feel welcome in the booth and part of the Portal family. Merry has outdone herself with this recipe entry in my blog series. Her food photography she sent me is so amazing that I had to share all of it. From the pictures alone, I can smell the ingredients and the finished pie. So, without more rambling…thanks, Merry.

“We are couple for years, gamers for years, we have 4 kids, 3 dogs, live in the village surrounded by forest in Poland.

We run Portal Games for 17 years.
We are completely different, like different things, and games are the thing that keep us close. ;-)”

  1. The recipe looks delicious! But I think it needs some interpreting…? A vanilla sugar substitute would be adding vanilla to the meringue? And, if you boiled (peeled, cored and sliced) apples for 30 minutes you’d have applesauce, not the apple chunks in the picture. Mayhap 3 minutes? Also what is 80 dkg of flour? kg would be kilogram, I think…but dkg? The egg whites would need some sugar beaten into them to become meringue but how much goes with the apples (“some”) and how much with the egg whites? For that matter, I mentally translated 1 glass of sugar as 1 cup…but that is a guess – anyone else know more?

    1. Thanks for your questions. I heard back from Merry with some answers.

      “Ha;-)
I make this pie for so many years that I am not sure how to write about it ;-)”

Q: A vanilla sugar substitute would be adding vanilla to the meringue?
A: I thinks yes but I have never tried

Q: And, if you boiled (peeled, cored and sliced) apples for 30 minutes you’d have applesauce, not the apple chunks in the picture. Mayhap 3 minutes?
A: Nope, 20-30 minutes. I use usually this type of apple – https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reneta They are the best.

Q: Also what is 80 dkg of flour? kg would be kilogram, I think…but dkg?
A: 0,80 kilogram, dkg is dekagram

Q: The egg whites would need some sugar beaten into them to become meringue but how much goes with the apples (“some”) and how much with the egg whites?
A: With eggs about 2-3 spoons. With the apples about a cup. It depends of apples. Some of them are sweet enough to put less sugar.

Q: For that matter, I mentally translated 1 glass of sugar as 1 cup…but that is a guess – anyone else know more?
A: One glass – it is 0,25 litres
